Yucef Merhi (Caracas, 1977) examines the interrelationships between language, technology and history by using programming, hacking, video games and technological devices from different eras. His work addresses philosophical, linguistic, political, ecological and social concerns with the aim of raising awareness and making visible the fluctuations of the contemporary environment.
He studied physics and philosophy in Caracas and New York, and holds a Master’s in Interactive Telecommunications from New York University. In 2020, Merhi joined the MIT Open Documentary Lab as a fellow, researcher, and founding member of the AR and Public Space Artist Collective. He has also been awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship in Digital/Electronic Arts.
Merhi has exhibited at the New Museum (New York), Bronx Museum (New York), LACMA (Los Angeles), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), De Appel (Amsterdam), La Colonie (Paris), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul) and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Caracas), as well as at the São Paulo‑Valencia Biennial, Istanbul Biennial, Ljubljana Biennial and Cuenca Biennial. His work is part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Contemporáneo (MEIAC) and the National Art Gallery of Venezuela (GAN), among others.
